Our Approach

Cutting Red Tape for Cost Savings

American families deserve clean energy that’s simple, affordable, and accessible. We remove the barriers that make rooftop solar and battery storage expensive and slow to install. Cutting this red tape means families see immediate cost savings and our grid gets stronger.

By streamlining permitting, interconnection, and outdated rules, Permit Power ensures families can choose clean electricity from their rooftops—saving on bills while batteries support the grid and bring down costs for everyone.

A Policy Roadmap to a Future Without Red Tape

Imagine a future where solar and batteries are as easy to buy as a refrigerator.

Families can buy solar and battery systems and have them installed that week. Like other home appliances, solar and battery systems are standardized across the country, and are cheap and easy to install. Tens of millions of homeowners make the choice to power their lives with clean electricity from solar on their roof. These homeowners save money on their own utility bills while their batteries cheaply provide essential services to the grid, driving down utility bills for all:

  • Instant Access: Families purchase solar and battery systems and get them installed that same week.

  • Affordable & Standardized: Like other home appliances, solar and batteries are standardized nationwide, cutting costs and ensuring easy installation.

  • Widespread Adoption: Tens of millions of households power their lives with clean electricity from their roofs—saving on bills and strengthening the grid.

To get there, we’re focused on four priorities:

Local Permitting Reform

Instant, low-cost, standardized permitting eliminates local government red tape

Utility Interconnection Reform

Fast, predictable, and flexible interconnection removes utility barriers

Homeowner Freedom

Restricting HOA barriers to save money on your utility bills with rooftop solar

Modern Codes & Standards

Rules that keep pace with technology, reducing costs and expanding access rather than restricting it

Why it Matters

  • Automated Permitting Leads to More Rooftop Solar in Tucson and Pima County

Automated Permitting Leads to More Rooftop Solar in Tucson and Pima County

Automated permitting in Tucson and Pima County has made rooftop solar installations faster and cheaper, saving costs for consumers and local governments. In the two years after Pima County and Tucson switched to automated permitting using SolarAPP+, home solar installations increased at double the rate of the rest of the state. Since SolarAPP+ was first implemented in 2020, over 240 jurisdictions have signed up for SolarAPP+ with more signing up every month.

In this episode, we dig into one of the largest hidden reasons rooftop solar costs $35,000+ for the average American homeowner (while in Australia it's closer to $6K). Spoiler: It’s not the panels—it’s the paperwork.

  • Can cutting rooftop solar costs make up for losing tax credits?

By Jeff St. John: Slow and complex permitting and interconnection rules drive up U.S. rooftop solar “soft” costs. With tax credits going away, fixing them may be existential.
